Mary "Anise" Pease was born in Lawrence Co., OH in 1859, the daughter of James Pease (b. in NY) and Melissa Shelton (b. in Gallia, OH). Anise's parents were married in Lawrence Co. OH Jul 4, 1858. The family was residing in neighboring Scioto Co. in 1860 where her father was employed at an iron furnace. A son named James was born in 1861. The 1870 census reveals the family residing in Greenfield Twp. in Gallia Co. Melissa had become a widow, however. A Civil War widow's pension index reported that a Melissa Pease of Gallia Ohio whose spouse, James W. Pease was a member of the 56th Regiment Ohio Infantry (organized in Portsmouth, OH in 1861) had applied for a widow's pension. It is very probable that Anise had little or no memory of her father. In 1879, twenty year old Anise Pease would wed a young blacksmith of a neighboring community. They would become the parents of eight children with much sadness and grief along the way. Four of their eight children NOT recorded under "Children" below were:(1)William Safford Parkins - FAG # 33213151, (2) Lester Nelson Parkins - FAG # 68252564, (3)Edwin Lincoln Parkins FAG # 33210137, and (4) Mabel Parkins (a twin FAG # 33212963. Three of the above children are interred in the Bethel Cemetery in Gallia County, Ohio, the Parkins family's home cemetery. Lester Nelson Parkins was interred beside his wife in the Green Lawn Cemetery in Franklin County.
