Dale's life story as dictated to a grandnewphew in the Spring of 2006:

Hi, my name is Dale Delbert Remy. I was born Dale Remy but later added the middle name Delbert because I had to have a middle name when I enlisted during WWII. I was born on June 28, 1924 on a 240 acre farm in Vinton County, 2½ miles south-west of McArthur, Ohio. This farm was handed down generation to generation beginning with my great-great grandmother, Jane Dillon McQueen Ogan, to my mother, Clara Alice Moss. My great grandfather, Cunningham Huston, built the house that I was born in. As a child I hated tending farm crops but they were necessary for us to live. I was one of 11 children and we ate a lot. I remember my mother was always planting, harvesting, cooking or canning the things we needed. She was a fantastic cook and a wonderful person. When I was not tending the farm I attended school. My primary education was in a one room country school house. The school was not far from our house as far as the country goes, it was just one farm, 200 acres, over. I finished all 8 grades in 7 years. I went to high school in town at McArthur High School. I was a freshman the same year my brother, Clarence did. He is two years older than me. My favorite subject was math. My favorite teacher was Mrs. Woltz. She thought me for 6 years during my primary years. I never played any sports. I have no college degree although later in life I attended two colleges. I was 15 when I went on my first date with a 19 year old young lady. I cannot recall her name now but I remember she was a really nice person not to mention cute and well built.

When WWII broke out I enlisted for service along with 3 of my brothers. I remember my mother and father worked in a defense plant called, “Jones Crossroads.” They made bombs. I served in the Air Corps during WW II. It was a division split between the Army and the Navy. After World War II it separated from the Army and Navy and became known as the Air Force. During the war I trained for long flight missions to Japan. I learned later it was part of the training for bombing runs for the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was the building and deployment of the Atom Bombs. After the war I attended the schools Illinois and Missouri. I learned about engineering and airplanes at both, but I did not get a formal degree. I moved back to Ohio and settled in Gahanna. I worked 50 hours a week helping design airplane engines as well as fixing planes. I also helped to design aircraft to fight the Soviets during the Cold War. I worked for North American Air. The wars fought during my lifetime have been WWII, Korea, Vietnam, The Cold War, and the Gulf Wars.

The most important invention in my life was the jet airplane engine. A person that had the best influence on me was my school teacher. I was smart and lazy when I was young and she taught me the value of working. She did this with liberal application of a ruler. The world is different now because every thing happens at a faster pace. Our Nation's biggest problem is a lack of pride in our country. People are more efficient now than when I was young but they do not seem to respect America like my generation did. They did not have to suffer and pull together to fight for a cause like we did. They get everything they need in an instant. They do not appreciate what they have and they do not have the patience to wait for it. In my day you were friendly with your neighbor because he was your neighbor not because of what he had or could do for you. You had to rely on and help each other.
My favorite books when I was a young child were stories of the future. I had an overactive imagination and I could not wait to make all the futuristic things I was reading about and bring them to life. My favorite toys were musical instruments. I play the violin. My older brother, Nevan, taught himself how to play and then he taught me. One of my other brothers, Clarence, taught himself how to play the guitar. We used to all play together in a group for family and friends or anyone that was unfortunate enough to be trapped in the area.
The President I like the most is Ronald Reagan. I even met him once before he was president. We had breakfast together at a business convention in North Carolina. If I could change something in my life it would be avoiding anger. I did some stupid things that I regret and would like to change but cannot. My hobbies are genealogy and coin collecting. I have never owned any pets. I have been married twice. I met my first wife, Dorothy “Dottie” Brohard, while still living in Vinton County. She died of cancer in 1981. We did not have any children together but she had one child from a previous marriage. I was a bachelor for a few years before settling down again with my present wife, Mildred Jean Patterson Dobkins, in 1985. In 1984 I bought a condo in Florida with one of my sisters. Eventually another sister and two brothers moved into the same area in Florida. I sold the condo and got a home after I married Mildred. We did not have children, we were tool old. She had children from her first marriage. Her spouse also died from cancer. After a difficult illness while living in Florida, Mildred and I sold our home and moved back to Ohio to be near her children. Being older makes you want to near those that can help you.
