Joseph married German-born Ephia Lisebeth Weirick February 1, 1855, in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Charlotte Elmira (b. 07/13/55 - married James A. Decker), John H. (b. 07/06/57), Naomi Catherine "Kate" (b. 06/29/59 - married an Adair), Cyrus Curtin (b. 02/16/61), Joseph Luther (b. 01/13/63), Mary Jane (b. 02/13/66 - married D. Grier Flack), and L. Denton (b. 02/05/68. In 1860, he was a laborer living in Antrim Township, Franklin County, and stood 5' 7" tall with light hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted at the stated age of thirty in Chambersburg October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service there November 4 as a private with Co. B, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863.

He died at his home at the stated age of 57-1-16 from "croupous pneumonia." He had been a member of Chambersburg's Housum Post No. 309 G.A.R.
