SEEK MT. LENA MAN IN DEATH OF SCHROYER - Myersville Resident Said To Have Been Riding With Ear Worten - BOTH DRINKING BEFORE ACCIDENT

Washington county authorities Tuesday night were searching for Earl Worten, 47, who was named as the driver of the automobile from which THOMAS THEODORE SCHROYER, 22 year old Myersville resident, stepped shortly before he was fatally injured Monday evening when a trolley car amputated both legs.

Tuesday afternoon State's Attorney Martin L. Ingram and Deputy Sheriff Leister Isanogle, of Washington county, were told that Worten, a native of Mt. Lena district near where the accident occurred, was the driver of the car that was being sought.

It was learned from Mrs. C. G. Eccard who operates a grocery store at Mt. Lena that Schroyer and Worten had been in her store together from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. the day of the accident. She said that Schroyer had had three bottles of beer to drink in the four hour period while Worten had considerably more. Worten and Schroyer were laborers on WPA projects and it was said that Worten told Mrs. Eccard that he was a steam shovel operator on a project near a sanatorium. Authorities believed this to refer to sanatoriums in nearby Pennsylvania but after checking at Franklinville, Pa., and Sabillasville and other hospitals in that area no trace of Worten could be found.

From the doctor's report filled out after an examination of Schroyer's body at Middletown Tuesday afternoon it was learned that there were slight bruses on the dead man's head but apparently not severe enough to indicate that he may have been slugged as was first believed. A Hagerstown coroner's jury examined the body at the same time.

Schroyer died at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday morning at the Washington County Hospital. He was badly weakened by loss of blood and had not been expected to survive.

The jury, summoned by Justice C. E. Heard, acting coroner, was excused until Friday morning pending efforts of Washington county authorities to locate Worten. Members of the family of Schroyer's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Schroyer, Pleasant Walk, with whom he lived, described the man as having come to their home Monday in an automobile and induced Thomas to ride away with him.

GIRLS SAW HIM
This fact was borne out by two young girls of the vicinity of Benevola, where the accident took place. The girls, whose names were withheld, were quoted as having said they saw Schroyer and the other man in an automobile near the trolley tracks. The two hailed them and asked if they wanted to ride in the car, they said. Soon afterward, some distance away, they saw the car turn around.

A man had appeared to stagger to the trolley tracks, the girls were quoted as saying. A west bound trolley, looming into sight, passed the spot, and as the motorman, Hugh Culler, Middletown, brought it to a sudden halt he found that it had passed over Schroyer's body, cutting off both legs near the knees.

Schroyer was married last January. He and his bride, who was Miss Doris Shank, had not begun keeping house together, however, she having remained at her home, and he at his.

FUNERAL THURSDAY
Besides his wife and parents, Schroyer is survived by seven sisters and brothers, as follows: Mrs. Carrie Irving, Quincy, Pa.; Mrs. Donna Dusing, Benevola; Mrs. Dorsey Ridenour, Mt. Lena; Oscar C., Myersville; Lloyd S., Beaver Creek; Albert, near Wolfsville, and William, Myersville.

The body was removed to the funeral home at Middletown, where it will remain until Thursday, when it will be removed to the home of the parents for the funeral services, leaving the home at one o'clock. Futher service in Pleasant Walk United Brethren church at 1:30. Interment in U.B. cemetery, Mt. Lena. Gladhill Co., funeral directors.
