The State of South Carolina lost a distinguished and effective citizen Thursday [May 18, 1967] when Calhoun A Mays of Greenwood died at age of 82. A Lawyer, he served as a State Senator during the crucial years of change during and after WWll. A quiet man in the Senate, he was respected, and his views carried weight in shaping the affairs of the state. Mr. Mays also rendered outstanding statewide service as President of the State Bar Association in 1955 and as Chairman of the South Carolina Archives Commission for several years. He also served as a special state judge on many occasions. Mr. Mays was a graduate of the College of Charleston in 1906. He was in military service as a Volunteer in WWl He was a practicing attorney of the Greenwood County Bar for 56 yeaars, having begun practice here in the year 1911. He had been a Trustee of Lander Foundation, a past President of Greenwood Rotary Club, a Mason, a former Deacon and Trustee of South Main Street Baptist Church. Survived by his widow, Mrs Mae Marshall Trammell and 3 children: Mrs Charles R Lund Jr; Marshall T Mays and Calhoun A Mays Jr. The Index-Journal (Greenwood, SC), Tuesday, 23 May 1967.
