Greenwood, Dec 6 - Col Samuel Butler Mays, 76, prominent citizen of Edgefield County, died early tonite at the home of his daughter, Mrs D G Gambrell, here. He had been in feeble health for some time and was a patient in a local hospital for several weeks.
Col Mays was a farmer and spent his entire life on his farm near Edgefield and was prominently identified with all movements for the betterment of agriculture. As a young man, he was active in the cause of good government in 1876 and was Captain of the Edgefield Hussars in the early nineties and later was Colonel of a militia regiment.
Col Mays was twice married. His first wife was Miss Ella Calhoun of Edgefield County. His second marriage was to Miss Mattie Miller of Edgefield who, with the following children by the first marriage, survive him:

Sam B Mays Jr, Chicago
Calhoun A Mays Greenwood
Mrs Eugene H Black Greenwood
Mrs Campbell Greenwood
Miss Ella Mays Greenwood
He also leaves one brother, John M Mays, Edgefield and a sister, Mrs Lemie M Talbert of Charleston, WVA.
