ADAM STEPHAN was born on Sep 3, 1813 in Lampertheim, Starkenburg, Hesse-Darmstadt. He was Baptized in the Lutheran Church shown to the right in Lampertheim. His father Johan George Stephan b1787 was 26 and his mother Anna Maria Schmidt b1793 was 20. He passed away in 1874. A Gravestone that simply says 'Father' marks his Grave.( A Big Thanks of Appreciation to Linda for Photographing his Marker for me)
His birth record from the German Lutheran Church records translated says:
" 3 Sepz 1813-The godfather was Adam Steffon (b1775), a citizen and farmer here, who, along with father and the priest who performed the baptism, signed the present record: Adam Steffon, Georg Steffon, Chr. Abr. Hepp, priest, page #------"

Pictured below is the Castle Starkenburg in Hessen near where the Stephan Families resided for generations. It is the Landmark from which the area takes its name.
Adam Immigrated with Steffan cousins in 1832 that settled in Adams Co, Penns. He came over aboard ship with his Cousin - also an Adam - see Mem# 31253519. He is found on the 1850 Cincinatti, Ohio Census listed as a Shoemaker. He eventually had 10 children with Caroline Catherine Rachel Pötter for whom he returned to Hessen for in 1853 after he 0btained his citizenship in 1852. They returned aboard ship in Oct 1854 with a young son Adam. Adam's profession was a Shoemaker & he is recorded in the local Tax Records as early as 1852 when he achieved his citizenship. He arrived back in America in Oct 1854 with Caroline and a young 1 year old son Adam along with his Cousin Georg Stephan b1823- they were both Shoemakers by trade(their fathers were Cousins). We believe Adam Michael died in 1858 at the age of 5. We find the family on the 1860 Census for Hollidaysburg, Blair Co. He lived most of his life in & around Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately He suffered a Stroke in 1869 & died on June 29, 1874 in Cambria City, Pennsylvania, at the age of 60 in the County Poor Home show above. His children were farmed out to relatives in the local community. A Stone that simply says 'Father' marks his Grave. This writers grandfather Joseph Philip Stephens eventually migrated out to Montana,USA in abt 1885 where my Dad Joseph Phillip Jr was born in 1905. Great Grandma Caroline adopted the name Stevens in the late 1890's after Adam's death in 1874.
