Michael Gabbard, Jr. was the son of Michael and Mary Margaret "Polly" (Peters) Gabbard. He was born in May, 1824 in Manchester, Clay, Kentucky.

He is not to be confused with Michael "Drunk Mike" Gabbard, the Union Civil War Soldier who was the son of Isaac and Jenny Gabbard. There is no record that this Michael Gabbard, Jr. served on either side during the Civil War.

Michael Gabbard married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Cundiff in 1853 in Breathitt County, Kentucky. They had been married 53 years when he died. He was a farmer and they lived most of their marriage, if not all, near Jackson in Jetts Creek or Crawford.

They were the parents of these known children:
