Lawrence Ray 'Jerry' Brown died in a Corpus Christi hospital at 4:00am Saturday, November 8th, after a short illness. He was 74.

He was born in Elmdale, near Crawfordsville, Indiana, the fifth child of Ora Rafferty and Martha Jane Rafferty. Originally named Ray Ernest Rafferty, he graduated from Wingate High School in Wingate, Indiana, and thereafter enlisted in the Indiana National Guard. On completion of his service, at the age of 23, he moved south, first to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he changed his name from Ernest Rafferty to Lawrence Brown. Then Lawrence, he moved to Beaumont, Texas, where he worked on a large ranch for about six years.

On a vacation trip to Mexico, he stopped in Sinton, Texas where he met Mr. Ledbetter, who introduced him to Rosalie, his daughter. They were married a year later and remained married until his death. They had three children: Patricia, Jerry, and Carol.

Lawrence was a Methodist, a businessman, and past president of the Sinton Chamber of Commerce.

Note: Ernest Rafferty was born in 1906. After changing his name to Lawrence Brown, he used the year 1909 for his birthdate.
