The following information was taken from the Minutes of the 62nd Annual Session of the Mountain Union Baptist Association held at the Beech Creek Church, Watauga County, NC, on 31 August and 1 September 1928:
"Brother J. H. Long was born November 21, 1849. Deceased May 28, 1928. Age 78 years, six months and seven days. He was married to Nancy C. Oliver, June 17, 1872. Unto them were born two children. His devoted wife and one child preceded him to that glory land many years ago. He was married again on the 29th of July 1879, to Rhoda C. Comer. Unto this union were born 11 children, five of them having gone on to mansions above. He was a kind loving husband and father and a good neighbor and he never turned any one away from his door hungry or cold. He leaves his aged and feeble companion and children and many friends to mourn his loss. Early in life Brother Long gave his heart to God but sometime after he went somewhat astray but many years ago he turned his face heavenward, joined the church at Fox Creek and has lived a devoted Christian the remainder of his life. Weep not, bereaved companion and children, but be ready and watching and waiting that when the Master calls, you can meet your husband and father in the mansion on high. The funeral service was held at Fox Creek Church by Elders James Barker, W. S. Eller, R. C. Spence and others."
