In 1860, he was a farmer living in Codorus Township, York County. On October 24, 1862, he was drafted and assigned to Co. B, 166th Pa Inf, at the rank of private but procurred a substitute and was discharged.

Died at 3 a.m. at his home in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, at the age of 85 years, 9 months, and 24 days. Buried at Stone Church Cemetery on Monday October 2, 1911. The funeral director was George F.W. Miller of Glenville. Lewis was survived by six children, 28 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and one brother.
