John P. Husting, Mayville's grand old man, beloved by every man, woman and child, is dead. He passed away peacefully on Thursday morning at about 10 o'clock at the fine old age of eighty-five years, the afflictions of advanced age having ended his long, useful life.
Mr. Husting was born on August 4, 1838 in the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg, and came to this country in 1846. On February 16, 1863, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Juneau, a daughter of the founder of Milwaukee. The couple celebrated their golden anniversary in 1913, with all their children present, and their 60th wedding anniversary last year. His wife passed away in death three months ago, in April. Two sons, U.S. Senator Paul O. Husting, and Otto Husting, also preceded him in death several years ago.
Those surviving are: Mrs. C. W. Lamoreux, this city; Max, Fargo, N. D.; Leo, Oshkosh; B. A., Fond du Lac; and Gustav and Berthold of this city. Also one sister, Mrs. Susanne Kremer.
The Husting family moved to this city from Fond du Lac in 1876 and Mr. Husting established a jeweler business which he conducted for many years. He also served as postmaster of Mayville for some time.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. W. Lamoreux. A few hours before, only a few blocks from his bier, his sister, Mrs. John Langenbach had breathed her last. L. S. Keeley delivered the funeral address, the Rev. Geo. C. Carmichael assisted at the services. Miss Alexa Weber of Theresa rendered a vocal solo. The pallbearers were six nephews of the deceased: Robert Langenbach of this city, Armand Langenbach of West Bend, Victor Husting of Milwaukee, Edward Kremer and Alex Dana of Fond du Lac, and Bertram Weber of Theresa.
The long line of autoes in the funeral cortege moved down Main Street to Graceland cemetery where he was laid to rest beside his helpmate of over half a century.
