Perceda Lavinia [Wike] Hartsoe was the daughter of David and Mary M "Polly" [Diel] Weik. She married Jacob Laban Hartsoe (son of Eli & Sally [Reece] Hartsoe) on Nov. 13, 1859 in Catawba County.
1850 – Catawba: age 13, Attends school;
1860 – Catawba: Jacob, a blacksmith, & wife, Ceda [Wike] Hartsoe, age 23;
May 5, 1864 – Widowed at the tender age of 26, her life, like much of the south, is devastated when husband, Jacob, is killed during the Civil War "Battle of the Wilderness" in Virginia;
1870 – Newton: age 33, Widowed with her 2 little girls, Ceda carries on; keeps house; can read, but cannot write; almost the whole census page looks like "single mothers" - but they are
Widows of the Civil War;
1880 – Newton: Perceda L. Hartsoe, 43, can read & write, disabled and cannot work due to consumption; daughter, Laura A. Hartsoe, 18, keeps house; daughter, Amanda E. Hartsoe, 16, attends school;
1900 – Hickory: Widowed, age 63, lives with daughter & son-in-law, Amanda Elizabeth and William Lawson Walker;
1910 – Hickory: Widowed; age 73, lives alone; 2 children born / 2 children living;
1920 – Hickory: Widowed, age 83, mother-in-law, living with the Walker Family again; can read & write; has never remarried;
