REST IN PEACE..
Rufus Sherrill Moyers born the son of Wyley and Sarah Jane "Sallie" Moyers in Tennessee, possibly Rhea County as they first showed in 1850 Rhea County, Tennessee as a family. Rufus had eleven siblings, names coming from the 1850 census so could have been one or two more that had moved out on their own before 1850, mother and father had been married since 1832, mother's age was 13 and oldest child listed in 1850 census was born in 1836.
Rufus was born the twin of Nancy K Moyers....Nancy K was known by family as Nannie K and died only one year earlier than her twin brother Rufus. She is buried in Wallace Cemetery in Limestone County, Alabama and her married name is Baker.
Rufus Sherrill married Mary Frances "Fannie" Weir, daughter of Leonard Lindsey and Susan Frances Young Weir of Waterloo community. The Weirs can be found buried in the Weir-Blair Cemetery in Limestone County, Alabama.
Rufus Sherrill and Fannie married in 1875 in Limestone County, Alabama and had seven children, six living to adulthood. Their son, Alford Whitten Moyers was my grandfather.
Rufus and his family owned and operated a tannery along the creekside in what is now the city limits of Athens, it was located in the area around the railroad tracks and the creek that runs directly down the middle of Athens. Rufus later sold his tannery and bought a farm in rural Limestone County, Alabama on Lucus Ferry Road and farmed for the remainder of his life. He lost Fannie in 1901 but at the age of 56 remarried in 1906 to Mary Lillian Reeves, a lady much younger than he, being only 17 years old. The children of Rufus didn't approve of this union at all, family lore has it that they tried to run her off, she died in Decatur, Morgan County, Alabama in 1975, still bearing the surname of Moyers. Their marriage was short lived as Rufus had died in 1908 and is buried in Tanner Cemetery along side his first wife Fannie.
