Eleanor Etheldred Warner was born to Edgar and Mary Warner on November 5, 1892 at Sunrise, MN. In 1912 she went to New England, ND to teach at a country school and while there she met Ivan Hammer, whom she later married at her home in Harris, MN on June 24, 1915.
They homesteaded on a farm near New England, ND until 1920 when they moved to Mellette, SD. to farm. In 1927 they moved to the town of Elkton, SD where they lived for four years. When Ivan's father, John, decided to retire from the family farm in 1931, Eleanor and Ivan moved to the farm SW of Elkton in order to farm. In 1943, they retired back to the city of Elkton and their daughter and her husband, Adele and Roy Bebensee, took over the farming.
After their retirement from farming they spent three winters in Arizona and one in Mississippi. Ivan died in May 1956.
They had seven children:

Adele….who married Roy Bebensee (my grandparents)

Lillian…who married Richard Ponto

Edgar

Floyd...who married Florence

Bertram

Isabele…who married Mr. Riley (preceded her mother in death)

Barbara…never married. Barbara was born later in Eleanor's life with mental slowness.

Eleanor is my maternal great-grandmother. At some point she planted peonies on the south side of their house. Years later, I found out the house was going to be leveled. So I contacted the current owners to ask if I could go dig them up. My cousin and I went one summer day and got them. We both now have our great-grandmother's peonies growing in our yards. Eleanor died the year before I was born. My mom was named after her.
