Well known retired Rockcreek Twp. farmer, Robert H. Batzka, 71, of Markle Route 1, died at 4 a.m. Wednesday in University Hospital at Bern, Switzerland, where he was taken after becoming ill while vacationing with his wife.
Suffering a double blood clot condition, Mr. Batzka was rushed by ambulance to the hospital after being stricken while on a bus tour. One of the blood clots went to the brain and the other to one of his legs.
He had previous circulatory system ailments, having suffered a heart attack last February but was feeling well recently following a secondary flare-up in May.
Mr. Batzka and his wife, Sarah, a retired former teacher in Union and Rockcreek Twps. of Wells County, had started their trip to Europe June 29 and were scheduled to return home within a few days.
Born Oct. 2, 1906 at LaCrosse, he was a son of Frederick W. and Charlotte (Luken) Batzka. His marriage to Sarah (Gusman), who survives, took place April 29, 1941 at San Pierre, Ind.
Mr. Batzka, who attended the Markle United Methodist Church, was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ at San Pierre and the Markle Fish and Game Club.
Surviving, in addition to the wife, are a son, Norman Batzka of Northville, Mich.,; and three daughters; Mrs. S. Jan (Nancy) Wimmer of Marion, Mrs. Dennis (Carol) Opal of Huntington and Mrs. Roger (Lynda) Miller of Markle.
Two sisters, Miss Edna Batzka and Mrs. Frank (Helen) Rosch, both of San Pierre; nine grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren also survive.
