DUMAS — Earl Beck, 92, of Dumas died Thursday, April 18, 2013.


Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Sanders, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Northlawn Memorial Gardens. Military rites will be by American Legion Post No. 224. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 500 N. Maddox Ave., Dumas.


Earl was born Feb. 23, 1921, in Floyd County to Albert and Edna Mary Lyles Beck. He graduated from Floydada High School in 1939. He farmed until going to work for Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego, Calif., in February 1941. He served in the Navy during World War II.


On June 17, 1948, he began working as a clerk at the post office in Dumas. He became assistant postmaster on Oct. 1, 1950, and was appointed postmaster in April 1963 until his retirement on Nov. 4, 1977. Earl loved to do craft work and help farmers after retiring. He joined the Methodist church in 1928 and had been a member since that time. He served on many church committees and also was a scout master, past president of Dumas Jaycees and past president of Kiwanis Club of Dumas. He also was a CASA volunteer and delivered Meals-on-Wheels.


He married Janet Green on June 12, 1948, at her parents home in Plainview. She preceded him in death on Jan. 17, 2008.


Survivors include a son, Charles Beck and wife Cookie of Liberty Hill; a daughter, Vicki Martin and husband Danny of Dumas; a brother, Edward Oran Beck of Waco; three sisters-in-law, Maxine Beck of Childress, Julia Beck of North Richland Hills and Clarice Alley of Plainview; seven grandchildren, Brian Beck, Brandon Beck, Rebecca Boardman, Nicole Gravens, Christina Martin, Daniel Martin and Chance Beck; and several great-grandchildren.


The family suggests memorials be to the American Heart Association, 2514 82nd St., Lubbock, TX 79423.
