His wife, Helen M., died in 1972. Survivors included four sons, Harold, John, Tom and Robert; four daughters, Inez Chiles, Theresa Michaelis, Margaret Cunningham and Evelyn Wineteer; 38 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; and a half-brother, Presley French.
