Possibly named after 2 of his father's brothers, John William was born in Henderson Co, Tennessee where he spent his growing up years on the farm with his parents and siblings. He was 10 years old when the Civil War began, in which 2 of his uncles died, John M Smith-CSA and Britton Smith-Union. Those were hard years for the families of TN. At 20 he fell in love and on May 9, 1872 he married Tennessee Catherine McNatt, who live on a farm near by and they began a family. Sometime between 1883 & 1888 he moved his family to Greenville, TX. where some of the McNatt family had gone earlier. It is possible that his younger brother Leander T. Smith also moved his family there around that time. J.W. settled in Texas for a number of years and then moved into Oklahoma where he remained the rest of his life. His son Elgin Lee, my grandfather, said J.W. fathered his children well and he was a steward in the Methodist church. Elgin became a minister and J.W. and T.C. lived with him when they were older until they died.
