Known to his family and friends as E.D. his name is written here as Etheldread Daniel Smith, but I have yet to find a any document that verifies his middle name and since I believe that John M. Smith is his older brother, whose middle name was said to be McDaniel, I have no verification of the middle name of either one. However, this is a minor detail to me. They both served as a Justices of the Peace in the early 1860's for Henderson Co., Tennessee verified by court documents, where his name is written as E.D. Smith, Esq. & John as John M. or J.M. Smith, Esq.
Born in N. Carolina E.D., as he was known, moved to the Hardin Co. area with his parents and brothers. In 1845 he married Mary Ann Hanna, Capt. James Hanna's daughter, and owned a farm in the 13th district of Henderson Co. near Sardis. They continued to live and work there and raise at least 16 known children over the next 35 years. After Mary Ann's death in 1881 he, married Nancy Hamm in 1882 continuing to live in the same area until his death in 1910. E.D. made his will in 1909 in which he gave instructions for many of his children and made the unusual statement "sub heirs get nothing". Only a son or daughter would have an inheritance. A man of character and conviction. To my grandpa, Elgin Smith, he was known as "Judge Dred".
