Arnold Benitz
HIAWATHA, Kan. – Arnold O. Benitz, 83, Hiawatha, died Saturday morning, April 29, 1989, at a local hospital.

He was born and raised in Wathena, Kan., where he also attended school.

Later, Mr. Benitz farmed in rural Wathena, Highland, Kan., and north of Hiawatha and moved into Hiawatha in 1941. He also worked in construction. He worked as a meter reader from 1949 until retiring in 1969 from the Hiawatha Water Company.

Mr. Benitz was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church of Wathena and later transferred to the Zion Lutheran Church of Hiawatha where he taught Sunday School and Bible School for several years.

He also had served on various church committees. He was a member of the Lutheran Laymen’s League of the church.

He married the former Edna Ruhnke on June 16, 1934, in Wathena. She survives of the home.

Additional survivors: three daughters, Charlotte Louise Campbell, Burlingame, Kan., Geneva Adkins, and Edna Mae Evans, both of Topeka, Kan.; two brothers, Fred and Karl, both of St. Joseph; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Zion Lutheran Church, Hiawatha. Burial, Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Wathena. Visitation: after 10 a.m. today, Casselman-Meek Funeral Home, Hiawatha, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight.
