Funeral arrangements are pending at Casselman-Meek Funeral Home in Hiawatha.

Edna Benitz
HIAWATHA – Edna G. Benitz, 90, Hiawatha, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at a Hiawatha hospital.

Mrs. Benitz worked for a physician in Troy for several years and later was a certified medical aide at Hiawatha Community Hospital. She worked for 15 years for the offices of Drs. Nichols, Duckett and Larson, and later for eight years for Oak Ridge Acres Nursing Home. She and her husband also farmed in the Troy-Highland area until 1941.

She was born March 8, 1911, in Troy, the daughter of Charles and Martha Keihnhoff Ruhnke. She was raised near Troy and attended Troy schools.

Mrs. Benitz was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Hiawatha, Lutheran Woman Missionary League and the Bible study group.

She married Arnold O. Benitz on June 16, 1934, in Wathena. He died April 29, 1989.

Survivors include three daughters, Charlotte Campbell, Burlingame, and Geneva Adkins and Edna Mae Lovell both of Topeka; a brother, Charles Ruhnke, Horton; four sisters, Esther Middendorf, Hiawatha, Helen Schmidt, Norfolk, Neb., Marguerite Damm, St. Joseph, Mo., and Dorothy Bode, Muskogee, Okla.; six grandchildren’ and 12 great-grandchildren.

Celebration of life services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery near Wathena. Mrs. Benitz will lie in state at Casselman-Meek Funeral Home in Hiawatha from 9 a.m. today to 11 a.m. Thursday, and then prior to service time Thursday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or the Aviary Fund at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha and be sent in care of the funeral home.
