MORGAN, MALVERN C., JR., of Lanett, Alabama died March 7, 2009. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at First Baptist Church of Lanett, Alabama. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Lanett, Alabama.
Mr. Morgan is survived by his daughter, Judith (George) Brown of Birmingham, AL and Nancy Morgan Waldrep of Columbus, GA; his sister, Louise Morgan Kent; his nephew, Mailon Kent, Jr. of Birmingham, AL; six grandchildren, Christopher (Suzy) Brown, Carter (Jennie) Brown, Catherine (Andy) Bodnar, all of Birmingham, AL, Morgan (Jodi) Waldrep, Amy (Ryan) Sheffield, Malvern (Katie) Waldrep, all of Columbus, GA; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mal "Coach" Morgan was born on March 28, 1916 in Lanett, AL. The son of Malvern C. Morgan and Nancy Tommye Daniel Morgan. He graduated from Lanett High School and received an athletic scholarship to attend Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University. He received a BS degree in Textile Engineering in 1939 and a Master of Education in 1957.
Mal had a distinguished career in college athletics, earning letters in football, basketball, and baseball in 1937, 1938, and 1939. He was captain of the basketball and baseball teams and named "Best All-Round Athlete" for the 1938-1939 school year. He was named to the All-Southeastern Conference Football and Baseball Teams in 1939, and was among the top scorers in the conference in basketball. Other highlights included: playing in the 1938 Orange Bowl game in Miami, Florida and in the 1939 Blue-Gray All-Star Football game in Montgomery, Alabama.
After leaving Auburn, he began his teaching and coaching in Lineville, AL. While he was teaching in Opelika, AL, he entered military service April 7, 1942 and served until the end of World War II in 1945. He was a Captain and a Battery commander in a field artillery battalion, serving with the first and third armies in the five campaigns of the European Theater of Operations (ETO); he was awarded five campaign battle stars for distinguished service in ETO; the "Purple Heart" and the Bronze Star medals for action during the "Battle of the Bulge"; The American Campaign medal, World War Victory medal, World War II occupation (Germany) medal and four overseas ribbons.
Upon completion of his military service he returned to teaching and coaching at Dawson, GA. He came to Lanett in 1947 and was Athletic Director, Coach and Teacher until 1959. During his twelve years as coach, Lanett had three undefeated and three state champions in Football. The basketball teams were runners-up or District Champions five times and played in the state tournament five times. They placed third in 1952.
Morgan was head coach of the winning South Team in the 1950 North-South All Star game played in Tuscaloosa, AL. He was class "AA" football coach of the year in 1958. He was inducted in the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. The Auburn chapter of the National Football Hall of Fame gave him the distinguished service award in 1999.
During the summer months, Morgan played professional baseball in the Alabama State League and the Georgia-Alabama League. He played the seasons of 1946, 1947, 1949, and 1950 with the "Valley Rebels" who represented the Greater Valley Area of Valley, Lanett and West Point in the Georgia-Alabama League. In 1947, he set a Georgia-Alabama League record for the most hits and tied for the most doubles in a season. He played and managed the Rebels in 1949. He was named to the Hall of Fame of the Georgia-Alabama Baseball League. He had 21 players to receive athletic college scholarships.
In 1959, he became the managing officer and executive Vice-President of First Federal Saving and Loan Association of West Point, GA.
Morgan was a member and Sunday school teacher of the First Baptist Church of Lanett. He served in a number of civic and professional posts in the Greater Valley Area. He was a member of the Lanett City Council and the Board of Education. Past President and Director of the Lanett Kiwanis Club, Director of Citizen National Bank, First Federal Savings and Loan Association, Valley Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement, George H. Lanier Hospital, Auburn Football Letterman Club and was a member of Baseball and Basketball Letterman Clubs.
