Charity Rachel Melvina Phillips was born in Tri-City, Claiborne County, TN, to Margaret Lundy and James Buchanan Phillips. She grew up with her two sisters, Fannie Jane and Hattie Bell, and brother Wiley.

She married John Henry King on March 6, 1917, and they had nine children: Jewel Evelyn, Esther May, John Hoyt, Lillian Margaret, Raymond Harding, Leonard Worthy, Wayne Edward, Hattie Reba, and Mildred Martha.

The Kings lived on a farm on Hwy 411 just outside of the town of Benton, TN, on the Ocoee River in a house three bricks thick. Charity is buried in Old Ocoee/Four Mile Cemetery in Benton.
