Alonzo's parentage has been a mystery to us and probably anyone who has tried to trace him through genealogical research. He is first found living with a stepfather Hugh O'Pry and his mother Linny. Linny must have died around 1865 because Hugh O'Pry was remarried in 1870. Alonzo is a young man then and still living with his stepfather, Hugh. Family records passed down to the family through Alonzo's son, Alonzo Miller Short, show that Alonzo L. Short was born in Atlanta, Georgia, but the earliest census records show he was in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia. He remained in the same county until the mid 1880's.

We also have found no proof of what Alonzo's middle is, on every record we have found it is only the letter L.

We do know Alonzo was a farmer in later years but was first working in a cotton mill when he was found living in Columbus, Muskogee County, Georgia. He divorced his first wife Sarah Howard Short, who later remarried. He left Georgia after the 1880 census and next is found in Hunt County Texas, where he married Lucy Wooldridge Shipp, a widow. He was also found in Kaufman County Texas on the census records. He eventually settled in Atoka County, Oklahoma in the small town of Caney, Oklahoma with his last wife Artelia Matney, and a large family. He was living in Caney, Oklahoma when he died.

Alonzo is the Jim Short's great grandfather through his marriage to Artelia Matney Short.

We've worked on the Short family since 1986 and still have very little information on Alonzo L. Short, but it has been fun trying to figure out the mystery of his life and his parents. We've been to Columbus, Georgia twice and it is a very pretty area that he lived in.
