Information Not in Obituary:After the war, Stephen returned to Texas and was reelected Tax Assessor and Collector, but chose to resign, giving up a much needed salary, rather than take the iron clad oath. In Orange Co he built a large law practice that extended throughout the East TX coast district, and was true to his principles when the test came during the carpetbag rule in Texas. His counsel was always for moderation and patience. He was a prominent supporter of the appropriation to create the University of Texas, a Presbyterian. He was proud of his French Huguenot heritage.

Gonzales Inquirer Nov. 4, 1910 pg 1 (Taken from Houston Post)-- Aged Citizen Dead: Orange, Texas, November 2-Judge Stephen Chenault a former citizen of Orange for many years and connected with much of the earlier history of this city, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Yancey W. Holmes, in Hale Center, TX, at the advanced age of 79 years. Hon. Chenault O'Brien of Beaumont, a nephew of the deceased, was in Orange today arranging for the funeral, which will occur here tomorrow. The remains of the deceased jurist will reach Orange at 9:45 in the morning and the funeral will occur immediately, with interment in Evergreen cemetery beside his wife, who died several years ago.Stephen Chenault was a veteran of the Confederate army, having served throughout the entire war with Terry's Rangers, and being in all of the battles participated in by that organization. After the war he came to Orange, where he lived until a few years ago. As representative in the State legislature from this district, as county attorney and as county judge of Orange county, he served the people faithfully and well and was active always in movements for the good of the city and county. Decedent leaves an only child a daughter, Mrs. V. W. Holmes of Hale Center, Mrs. Ellen O'Brien, widow of the late Captain George W. O'Brian of Beaumont, is a sister of the decedent. Judge Chenault was a half brother of Messrs Lucien, Chas. and Ben Chenault of this city.
