Gonzales Inquirer July 6, 1927~~~Charles Polk Chenault Sr. Is Called to Final Reward ~~~Veteran Member of Gonzales County Official Family Passes. Funeral To Be Held Thursday Afternoon~~~Gonzales and Gonzales County lost a highly esteemed and honored old citizen Wed morning, July 6, at 8:40 o'clock when Charles Polk Chenault Sr., veteran member of the county's official family, passed on to his eternal reward, the end coming following a general break down in health several weeks ago. Mr. Chenault had suffered an attack of flu months ago, from the effects of which he never fully recovered owing to his advanced age. He was 77 yrs, 10 mos and 28 days of age. Surviving Mr. Chenault are a son, Whit Chenault of Dilworth section, a daughter, Mrs. A.W.Caperton of Harwood, both of whom were constantly at his beside for the past several weeks, three grandchildren Chas. Polk Jr, Mozelle and Maldrice Chenault, a sister Mrs. J.D. Houston, of San Antonio, and a half sister Mrs. Ellen O'Brien of Beaumont, who was here to visit him recently. His wife, who was before her marriage Miss, Eugenia Testard passed away 35 years ago. Four brothers, Jim, John, Lucien and Ben Chenault, all preceded him to the great beyond as did two half brothers, Stephen and Lanice Chenault of Orange and one sister Mrs. S. L. Fore, who passed away several years ago in Floresville. He also leaves a number of nieces and nephews among them Editor Sam Fore of Floresville Chronicle-Journal. Mr. Chenault belonged to one of the prominent old pioneer families of this immediate section and was a life long citizen of Gonzales. He was born Aug. 8, 1849 at the old Chenault home opposite the First Baptist Church, now known as the A. L. Fitzgerald residence. He was the son of Felix Grundy Chenault and Eliza Polk Chenault, his parents both belong to the old time families that settled the Gonzales territory back in pioneer times. His father held the office of county clerk of Gonzales county for a period of 30 yrs and was one of the ablest county officials in the state, a record probably
unequaled in the state.Admirably fitted both by inheritance and training, for the same work, Mr. Chenault in early life became a member of the county's official family and had served as clerk in every office in the court house, having during his declining years, been chief deputy in the sheriffs department, serving with sheriffs Fly, Glover, Johnston and Neighbors. He was keenly alert in all the duties connected with the office which received his expert attention even up to several weeks ago when he was obliged to give up work. In the passing of Mr. Chenault the county has suffered a great loss. No man probably ever held office who was as familiar with every department of the county's official business, its record and archives as was Mr. Chenault, his place will be hard to fill. He possessed a remarkable faculty for remembering innumerable details connected with the various department, and had a rich fund of information from which to draw, when appealed to, he invariably furnished the information sought. County officials will sadly miss his presence, his able assistance. Obliging always glad to give any information wanted whenever and wherever sought. Mr. Chenault has left a splendid monument in the long years of faithful and efficient service in the court house. No man probably ever had more friends, through out the county or was better known than Mr. Chenault, and his passing brings deep regret. In their loss, the son and daughter and other loved ones will have the warm sympathy of this section. The
remains will be held at the funeral home of Kleine Brothers funeral directors until Thur, tomorrow afternoon, when they will be conveyed to the First Methodist church of which he was a member for over 43 years. Here the funeral services will be conducted at 4:30 o'clock by the pastor, Rev. J. W. Allbritten, assisted by Dr. J. E. James Pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Out of respect to his memory District court will adjourn for the afternoon Thursday. Interment will be made in the family lot in the City Cemetery.
