Henry Erastus Stanley Gardner was born 5 July 1840 in Vernon, Portage County, Ohio. He was the son of Elias Gardner and and Amy Pritchard. Henry was seven years old when the family departed with the Heber C. Kimball Company on 7 June 1948 by wagon train from Winter Quarters, Nebraska. The group arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on 24 Sept 1848.

At the age of 19, on 26 May 1860, Henry married Emma M. Moesser. This couple had the following children:
