His parents moved southwest of Tracy to the Bethel neighborhood. He was educated in the Bethel Country Grade School. In 1920 the family returned to the area which he was born and it was here he lived most of the remainder of his lifetime. He worked as a farmhand. In 1986 he became a resident of the Marion Care Facility at rural Knoxville. He was a resident of Westridge Manor for just one week. He was affiliated with the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella.

He stopped talking when he was 18 one reason given was that he had fallen off a horse. His parents made efforts to cure this condition. He was taken to doctors in Ottumwa. They even went to Marion South Dakota to spend several weeks consulting a specialist. Marion was a chiropractic center in those days.
He always enjoyed sorting out rocks off the farmland and disassembling equipment. His communication skills were limited due to his gradual loss of speech, but he was able to write and enjoy reading very much.
