Fred Smith, Third Ward Leader, Dies
FRED F. SMITH, of 420 John st., a Democratic leader of the Third Ward, died today in Crouse-Irving Hospital following a brief illness.
A life resident of this city, Mr. Smith was superintendent of streets under former Mayor Walrath and a retired stationary fireman for the State Department of Public Works.
He was the last Democratic alderman of the Third Ward.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Barbara Soukup Smith; a daughter, Mrs. Walter J. Gatesman; two sisters, Mrs. Charles Fenchel and Mrs. Frank Riley; a brother, Nicholas B. Smith; three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 8:30 A.M. Tuesday in the George W. Ballweg funeral home, 1234 Butternut st., and at 9 A.M. in Assumption Church. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery. Friends may call tomorrow and Monday.
