Waili (Violet) Marie Gray, 93, of Gloversville, NY, passed peacefully into eternal rest while in the arms of her beloved daughter, Helen M. Henry, on June 9, 2012, at the Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home in Gloversville. A patient there for the last three weeks of her life, Violet previously was cared for by Helen at her home for six years.
The eighth of nine children, Violet was born the daughter of Rupert and Vera Alve on February 22, 1919, in Newfield, NY. She was a graduate of Spencer, NY, High School, and worked at her family's dairy farm in Spencer until her early 20s. She then moved to New York City and was a housekeeper for a Finnish doctor and his wife for three years. She next served as a civilian employee at The Seneca Army Depot during World War II. She was united in marriage to William (Mike) Henry Gray in 1947 and they shared their lives together in St. Johnsville, NY, until Mr. Gray's untimely death on January 5, 1981.
Violet spent her entire life putting the needs of others before her own. While she worked for many years at various manufacturing companies in St. Johnsville, her biggest occupational contribution was the many decades of her life devoted to serving as a personal caregiver for the elderly.
In addition to the death of her husband, Violet was predeceased by her parents, seven siblings, who all resided in Spencer, NY, a sister who resided in Lakeworth, Fla., and numerous other family members. She is survived by her daughter Helen and companion Larry LaRowe of Gloversville, NY, son-in-law Brian Henry and grandson Christopher Henry of Johnstown, NY, and stepsons Melvin (Nancy) and Gerald (Barbara) of Waterloo, NY, and their families.
At her request, Violet's body has been donated as an anatomical gift to the Albany Medical College in Albany, N.Y., for purposes of medical research. Said donation of her body was once again an effort by Violet to help others, and arrangements for that donation were made by the Hans Funeral Home on Western Avenue in Albany. In keeping with Violet's further requests, there will be no calling hours and a memorial service will not be held. Memorial contributions on her behalf can be made to the St. Johnsville United Methodist Church, 7 E. Main St., St. Johnsville, N.Y. 13452.
