Lt. Colonel, Retired,
United States Air Force

Surrounded by his family, Eino Victor Alve, aged 88, passed away on May 29, 2009 at Elderwood Senior Care in Waverly, NY.

Eino was a life-long resident of Spencer, NY, born April 21, 1921 to Frank Ribert and Vera Sophia Alve.

He graduated from Spencer High School, served in the United States Air Force, and upon returning from the World War II attended Cornell University as a student of veterinary medicine until he purchased a dairy farm in Spencer.

He expanded the farm into a successful family business until selling ownership to his daughter Susan and son-in-law, Arvo Rautine, who continue its operation. The Air Force awarded Eino with the Distinguished Flying Cross, a military medal for aviators in honor of their heroism and extraordinary achievement during flight. He enlisted in 1940 and became the pilot of a B-24 airplane stationed in Norfolk, England. He successfully completed 35 missions over Germany, a number far exceeding the average, and safely brought his crew back to home base every time. He continued to serve the country as a member of the Air Force Reserves until 1981.

In retirement, Eino wrote his wartime memoirs in a self-published book, Rembrances of Shack Rabbit, which is available at the Spencer Library. Elementary school students in Norfolk, England have corresponded with Mr. Alve and use the book in their history classes.

In recent years he had been an active volunteer restoring airplanes at the War Museum in Elmira, NY. When a restored B-24 Bomber made a visit to Elmira, the crew honored Mr. Alve with a place in the pilot's seat for a flight over upstate New York.

Eino was a dedicated member of his community serving as a volunteer in many civic and farm organizations. In his more youthful years he was an assistant chief of the Spencer volunteer fire department, justice of the peace, member of the town board and one of the founding members of the first volunteer effort to improve Nichols Pond in the 1960's.

More recently, he had taken great pleasure in walking the newly groomed trail around the pond. He had a deep, respectful partnership with the earth and it gave him a sense of peace knowing that other caring volunteers shared his respect and vision of a beautiful pond, playground and nature preserve in downtown Spencer.

Eino is survived by Edna Alve, his wife of 63 years, and four daughters: Susan Rautine (and her husband Arvo) of Spencer; Christine Myers of Redlands, CA; Annette Alve of Bronxville, NY; and Lynn Alve of Ithaca. He has five grandchildren, Tanya Rautine, Jennifer Strasser (married to Lance Strasser), Amy and Ryan Myers, and Elizabeth Alve-Hedegaard. Three great-grandchildren survive him, Tanya's children, Arika and Ty Struzinsky (their father Steven, was a longtime friend to Eino ) and Jennifer's son, Connor Strasser. Eino has one surviving sister, Violet Gray.
