James Wesley Thomas was born on December 31, 1911 to James Granville Thomas and Lena Mae Hays Thomas, of Beckley, Raleigh, West Virginia.He left West Virginia after high school and joined the Navy, with a career that spanned 30 years. He married Hazel Marie 'Bobbie' Lukens in October 1933, after meeting her while stationed in Long Beach, California. He saw active duty all over the Pacific Theater for 20 years, and completed an additional 10 years as Fleet Reserve, retiring completely in December 1959. He survived numerous battles during World War II, including the sinking of his ship, the USS Hammann during the Battle of Midway. He was an avid fisherman, and spent his free time camping along creeks where he could fish. He left this world all too soon.

Interment in Harbor Rest Memorial Park. Five grandchildren [Jana, James, Richard, Ray, Theresa Winchester]. Baltz Mortuary Chapel, 1741 Superior, Costa Mesa.
