Harold Mark Schmidt was born in Saginaw, Michigan to Frederick J and Mary Helling Schmidt. Nicknamed "Nig" by his friends, Harold grew up and was schooled in the Saginaw school system, including Saginaw High where he was captain of the football team. Nig stood 6' 4" and was rumored to be one of the strongest men in Saginaw. He also graduated from the Michigan School of Mines, Houghton, Michigan (now Michigan Technological University) as a mining engineer.

While attending college Harold met and later married his sweetheart Rose Haas Schmidt, whose father was Joseph Haas owner and CEO of the Adam Haas Brewing Co. Nig and Rose had 2 children, Harold Mark Jr. and Gretchen S Schmidt. Harold died in childhood at age 7 due to complications from polio. They resided at 515 South Jefferson Ave, then moved to 1414 Gage St. while in Saginaw.

Harold enlisted in the Army as a captain during WWI. He was assigned as a Captain in the 32nd Division of the Michigan National Guard Corp. of Eng., Red Arrow Division. He served in France and was awarded France's Croix De Guerre for meritorious service.

After school and just prior to WWI, Nig worked for Trimountain Copper Mine circa 1911 to circa 1914, and Calumet & Hecla Mine in Calumet, circa 1917 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. After the war he returned to Saginaw were he was a partner in Wells and Schmidt Construction Co. They built deep sewer pits and paved roads. Later, Harold became Maintenance Supervisor Chevrolet Grey Iron Foundry until his death.
In 1936 Harold was taken to the University Hospital in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw, Michigan for an operation on his spleen. He died on the operating table and was returned to Saginaw for burial in Forest lawn cemetery next to his son Harold Mark Jr.

1917 Draft Registration shows Harold living on College Ave in Houghton, MI. His occupation is listed as a mining engineer with the Calumet & Hecla Mine in Calumet. He has wife and children. He claims draft exemption based on being an Engineer with the Michigan National Guard. Description: tall, medium build, black eyes, black hair. No Disabilities.
