Col Schmidt first entered the banking business as a teller in the Savings Bank of East Saginaw. Later when this bank consolidated with the Bank of Saginaw, he rose to the position of assistant cashier and vice-president, a position he held until the national bank crises forced it's closing.
His punctuality was noted with personal interest by his neighbors who "set their clocks by him". It was Col Schmidt who each morning opened the bank's vault on the minute. Col Schmidt was also involved in the lumber business. For many years Col Schmidt was active in Saginaw's Masonic work. He was a past master of Ancient Landmarks lodge 303 and one of it's life members and a member of Masonic Chapter 31.
He left son, Frederick J. Schmidt, Jr. of Saginaw; three grandchildren, Mrs Lloyd C. Falkenhagen, Miss Ruth Mary Schmidt, and Frederick J. Schmidt, III, all of Saginaw, one great-granddaughter, Gretchen J. Falkenhagen.
Funeral was at the Frazee Funeral Home, Dr. Carl Martinson officiated. Grave side services conducted by Col. Schmidt Camp 24, USWV.
