The beloved "Granny" of all who knew her, Mrs. Frederick J Schmidt Sr., 76 of 515 South Jefferson, died Monday at Saginaw General Hosp.

It was her knowledge and her ability to make candy in many delicious forms that won for her the title of "Granny" from children of the Hoyte school when her granddaughter, Gretchen, was a pupil there. She was "Granny" to all of the children, many of whom stopped daily to see her on their way to and from school.

"Granny" Schmidt's candy was a favorite with older folk, too, and there were few church socials that didn't include her contributions. Her ability to make candy also helped in the early financing of the Camp fire Girls camp, Na Tsi Hi, at Mack Lake 90 miles north of Saginaw. Interested in Camp Fire work, "Granny" at one time was a guardian, taking charge of a group of girls, and when plans were made for the building of a summer camp, she and her husband spent many weekends at the chosen site in Huron Forest. Mr. Schmidt was active with the men in the clearing of the site, while Mrs. Schmidt joined the women in preparing meals and planning the camp. Her home was also a headquarters as she directed women interested in Camp Fire in making pounds of candy, later sold to finance the camp.

Born Mary M Helling Jan 28, 1865, in Bradford, Ontario, Canada, she came to Saginaw with her parents when 6 years old, living first on a farm in Swan Creek township and later on a farm in Bridgeport. Later she moved with her family to Elk Township, Pennsylvania. When she was 19 she returned to Saginaw and for several years taught in the rural schools, including Ricker school. On March 9, 1889 she was married to Mr. Schmidt, a veteran of the Spanish American war, whom an Army Reserve unit was named in honor of.

She leaves her husband, one son, Frederick J Schmidt Jr. three grandchildren; Gretchen, Ruth Mary and Frederick J Schmidt III; and one brother Louis Helling of Ventura, California.
