In 1935, at age 70, Carried died horrifically when her clothing caught fire when she was burning rubbish using kerosene mid-day in her yard. Her husband John was working downtown, his occupation a painter. Neighbors working in a nearby garden helped extinguish the blaze. Though rushed immediately to the hospital, Carrie was burned too severely, and died 9 hours later at 10 pm. Her death was reported in a front page news article in the Lorain newspapers (where granddaughter Irene would later work as a reporter).
Widow John would remarry and then divorce Minnie (maiden name not yet known) before his death in 1948 in Elyria.
Carrie and John are buried side by side in Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Amherst, Ohio. John's grave is unmarked.
