Named Caroline for her mother, but after childhood used the name "Carrie".
Her father Jacob Fried/Freed was born 1818, and lived in Harmony, Butler County, Pennsylvania area, and was listed as a hack driver in the 1860 Census running a coach between Harmony and Pittsburg. Later he owned a general store, and went blind by August 1866. Jacob's father was Peter Freed born 1785, and lived with the young couple in Harmony in the 1860 census. Jacob's first wife was Caroline's sister Deborah Boyer who is buried in the Mennonite Cemetery.

Mother Caroline Boyer lived from 1831 to 1869. She died in July 1869 in Harmony, Butler, Pennsylvania during pregnancy of puerperal convulsions, according to the 1870 Federal Mortality Schedule. Caroline and Deborah's parents were Jacob and Elizabeth Boyer, who both died before 1840. Jacob was son of Bishop John Boyer, all buried in the Harmony Mennonite Cemetery. Caroline and Deborah had 2 other siblings: Mary Ellen Schantz and Hannah last name not yet known. Mary Schantz and family are buried one row in front of Caroline and 2 children, in the Grace Reformed Cemetery.

Jacob does not appear to have remarried and reared the 6 surviving children: Sarah A Bannon 1853, Stephen 1855, Catharine 1857, Elizabeth (Mrs. Charles R. Dunlap) 1861, Jacob 1863, and Caroline "Carrie" (Mrs. John McCurdy) 1865.

Caroline "Carrie" had two daughters: Bertha and Mildred.

Her first child, Bertha Irene Lewis, was born in 1889 to her first husband John Lewis. Divorce record has not yet been located. Bertha would name one of her 5 children Irene Caroline. Bertha married twice (Basil Baldwin and Hawley Sooy) and died a widow at an advanced age at the home of her son, Clarence Baldwin, in Orange County, California. She is buried in Medina, Ohio with second husband Hawley Sooy.

On 18 May 1900 In Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Carrie Lewis married John Marshall McCurdy who was born in the Pittsburg, Pennsylvania area to Jonathan McCurdy and Barbara Marshall.

Sometime before 1910, Carrie adopted her second daughter, Mildred B. McCurdy. Toddler Mildred died in the Harper Hospital in Detroit Michigan on 11 Sep 1911 of diphtheria. Burial information is sought.

Carrie and second husband John moved from the Allegheny County area of Pennsylvania to the Cleveland Ohio area by 1920, and the Elyria, Ohio area by 1930. Carrie's sister, Elizabeth Dunlap, had grandchildren born in Elyria at this time as well. The Dunlaps moved on to Pontiac, Michigan.

In 1935, at age 70, Carried died horrifically when her clothing caught fire when she was burning rubbish using kerosene mid-day in her yard. Her husband John was working downtown, his occupation a painter. Neighbors working in a nearby garden helped extinguish the blaze. Though rushed immediately to the hospital, Carrie was burned too severely, and died 9 hours later at 10 pm. Her death was reported in a front page news article in the Lorain newspapers (where granddaughter Irene would later work as a reporter).

Widow John would remarry and then divorce Minnie (maiden name not yet known) before his death in 1948 in Elyria.

Carrie and John are buried side by side in Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Amherst, Ohio. John's grave is unmarked. Granddaughter Irene Caroline (Baldwin) West-Wearsch is also buried in this same cemetery, along with Irene's grandson David Jon West, making multiple generations in this same cemetery.

Family still remember "Grandma Mccurdy". This author is her great great granddaughter. Family contact is sought.
