Born in Pennsylvania on April 14, 1889 to Carrie Freed (her parents Jacob Freed and Caroline Boyer of Harmony, Butler, Pennsylvania)

and John L Lewis, not much is known beside his photo and fact that perhaps he was involved in a local coal mining operation.

At age 11, Bertha's mother Carrie married John M McCurdy of North Pittsburg Pennsylvania. They had one daughter together, Mildred (1907 Pennsylvania – 11 Sep 1911 Detroit Michigan.

By 1920 John & Carrie Mccurdy had moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and by 1930 were living in Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio.

At age 19, on June 20, 1908 Bertha married Basil Bentley Baldwin (born 1880 Cortland, Ohio) in New Cumberland, Hancock County, West Virginia. They lived their early marriage in Beaver County, Pennsylvania But their children were born while the couple lived in Toronto, Canada.

Raymond Edward (1909 - 1986)
Irene Caroline West Wearsch 1911 - 1995
Clarence Horace Baldwin 1913 – 1996
Dorothy "Dot" Mary Mezatasta 1915 – 2008
Jack Basil Baldwin 1920 – 1995

By 1930 Basil and oldest child Ray were living in the Baltimore, Maryland area, and Basil had remarried Sadie Gwendolyn Martin in North Carolina. Bertha was living in Elyria, Ohio with the other children.

In 1935, Bertha's mother Carrie Freed McCurdy died when her clothes caught fire while burning the rubbish outside her home in Elyria using kerosine. Step-father John lived until 1948, he died at Bertha's home after a short illness. They are buried together in Ridge Hill Cemetery in Amherst.

By 1940, Bertha married widower Hawley Hart Sooy, who
had older children from his first marriage in Penfield, Ohio. Hawley and Bertha Sooy purchased apartment buildings in the Lorain, Ohio area, and Bertha became active founding the Church of the Open Door in Elyria.

Hawley Sooy died in 1956, and Bertha relocated to southern California, where she lived nearby her son Clarence Baldwin until her death . Her body was returned to Ohio to be buried beside Hawley and his extensive Sooy family.

A California death certification and obituary are sought. Messages from extended family are sought. This author is Bertha's great granddaughter, Judy.
