He married ELIZABETH PIFER 1809 (PIPHER, PIESEL or PIPER), March 29, 1832 in the United Presbyterian Church, Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. She was born September 23, 1809 in Stoughstown, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and died June 07, 1897 Clay County Memorial Hospital, Amoy, Clay County, Ohio. She was the daughter of JACOB PIPHER and ELIZABETH PIPHER.
Of John and Elizabeth's twelve children, Samuel, twins Edward (Reed) and Henry, Margaret (Maggie)(married to Adam Henry), and James all followed their maternal grandparents to Richland County, Ohio. George, Martin (Mark), John E., Mary (the wife of William Poe), Jacob, and Emaline (the wife of Manuel Oliver) all stayed in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Bartley died during the Civil War in 1864 of unknown reasons.
