Civil War Veteran,
CO I, No. 21 Pennsylvania Volunteer Calvary and
CO B, No. 208 Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.
The son of John Reed & Elizabeth (Pifer) Pugh and twin to Edward Reed Pugh, in 1860 he was living on his brother Mark's farm in Letterkenny Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and is in that census as a twelve-year-old.
A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in Franklin County July 25, 1863, and mustered into federal service there August 1 as a private with Co. I in the six-month organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pennsylvania). He honorably discharged at term's end February 20, 1864, at which time he is listed as a patient in a Harrisburg hospital. His brother Mark served in the same company.
2. Enlisted at the again overstated age of twenty in Harrisburg September 3, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 9 as a private with Co. B, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
