FARMER AND LAND DEVELOPER
Born in Londonderry, Ulster. Northern Ireland, he emigrated with his Scottish-Irish parents to Canada, first to Goulburn Township, then to East Nissouri, where he had extensive farmland holdings. In 1851 he married Hester Alderson in St Marys, Perth County, Ontario. Her family and his family had adjoining farms.
He was a farmer, but became an active land speculator and developer as area immigration inceased. At one time he was the largest farm property owner in the St. Marys area. He the sold his properties in St. Marys and went South as the American Dakota territories opened up for farm settlement. The family moved first to to St. Thomas, North Dakota. Unfortunately, after a series of misfortunes, including draught, grasshopper plague, grain failures, bank failure and transportation problems, he lost his lands. The subsequent litigation burdens followed him for years. The family next moved to Minneapolis to start again. There his sons finished their medical and legal training. Robert and his wife lived with their daughter, Mary (Stinson) in Minneapolis, Robert predesceased his wife, and was buried in Minneapolis. His wife subsequently returned to Canada and lived with her other daughter, Jennie, in Toronto where she died.
