On December 18, 1853, they arrived in the port of New Orleans on the ship Heidelberg that sailed from LeHavre, France. By 1854, they had traveled north on the Mississippi River and laid down roots in the city of Burlington, Iowa. Carl applied for citizenship on October 21, 1856. On some census records thereafter he was recorded as being "Charles," so he probably used that name after becoming an American.
Daniel and his family went south to St. Louis by 1860. Carl and Juliana remained in Des Moines County, Iowa, where five more children were born.
The family bought a farm near Kingston, in Des Moines County, by 1867. This farm would remain in the family until the 1930s Depression.
A descendant, an uncle of mine, has reported he was buried at St. Paul's cemetery in Huron Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, in an unmarked grave. He is not on the known records of the cemetery that are found online.
