John Brumm was the first child born in the United States to Carl "Charles" Brumm (1816-1870) and Eva Juliana (Osswald) Brumm (1823-1902), after the family's immigration to America from Württemberg.

He grew up in Des Moines County, Iowa in the city of Burlington, but was farming in nearby rural Sperry, Iowa by 1879.

April 2, 1893, in Kingston, Iowa, he married Mary (Wichhart) Brumm (1864-1928), a native of Baltimore Maryland, whose first husband, the late Charles Brumm, was John's brother.

Mary and John remained in Des Moines County until about 1909, when they moved to Texas. John died in Stratford, Texas, in 1915 from stomach cancer, and Mary returned to Iowa after his death.
