He spent his early years on farms in Fillmore and Thayer counties. He began school at Fillmore County No. 53, Clay County Star School south of Ong, and Thayer County District 90. He attended high school in Shickley; and, after the family moved to Longrnont, Colo. in March 1950, he graduated from Longmont High School in 1953. He furthered his education at Freed Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn. and Harding University in Searcy, Ark.
He worked beside his father on the farm. During high school, he had two paper routes, sometimes three, and worked as a short order cook and helped out in his parent's grocery store.
He worked his way through college by selling books and Bibles and Fuller Brush products. He was a partner in Holloway Trailers and later started his own fence business. His motto was "For fencin' call Swenson." In later years, he became a computer enthusiast and worked in the computer business as technical support. He was enrolled in computer classes to further his knowledge at the time of his death.
On April 5, 1956, he married his college sweetheart Reba Jo Ray in Nashville, Tenn. To this union, two children were born, a daughter, Cynthia, and a son, Eric. He raised his family in Davenport, Iowa, then moved to Ft. Collins, Colo. Later, he moved to Arlington, Texas. Reba passed away in November of 1991. In July 1999, he married Genoveva Miller in Carrollton, Texas.
David had quite a great sense of humor and was a practical joker. He might tell you that he had his PHD, which stood for "post hole digger." He enjoyed hunting with a black powder rifle in Colorado and Wyoming. He earned his pilot's license and enjoyed flying. He developed an interest in teaching English as a second language and spent two summers teaching English in Mongolia.
At the age of 15, he was baptized into Christ in Boulder, Colo. He was involved in church activities the rest of his life and sometimes served as a Bible teacher and lay preacher.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents, and two brothers-in-law.

Memorial services were held in Carrollton, Texas on Feb. 18 with several church members presiding.
Burial was in the Swedish Cemetery in rural Shickley, with nephew Timothy Spain presiding.
