Miss Julia Brown, the seventh girl of a family of ten children, was born in Hawkins county, East Tennessee, in the year 1801. From childhood she was a devoted christian, and at the age of seventeen, she became a member of the M.E.Church, which relations she held in honor until death came and told her to go home. In the years 1820 she was married to Andre Derrick, who was born in Hawkins county in 1799, in the same neighborhood as his wife's parents. They lived together in quiet peace and happiness. Sixteen children were born to them and brought up to maturity. Her husband died in Umatilla County Oregon, in the year 1868. Three of her sons she gave to the ministry, two to the M.E. Church and the other to the Christian Church. Ten of the children are dead and six are still living to mourn, but not as those who have no hope. It is believed that she has about 150 grand children, 300 great grand children and fifty great great grand children. She made her home with Smith Henderson and his wife, Kate, who is the youngest daughter of the deceased. Speaking to the writer of this note, she said: "Smith and Kate have always been good to me. God bless them. I have no worldly goods, but I gave my life in childhood to God, and now when I am old and feeble, He takes care of me. He will soon take me home to rest,: and He did so.
