On the 23rd July 1846 he enrolled in the Mexican War. He was organized on the 3rd August 1846 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas under Captain B.F. Robinson Company H, 2nd Regiment Missouri Mounted Volunteers.At the battle of Wagon Mound, New Mexico they lost one man (killed) Charles Casteel; and Joseph Derrick and Charles Wilson were slightly wounded. Joseph was shot with a ball below his knee joint and passing through his right leg. He was Honorably Discharged from the War on the 17th September 1847.
