Newton Ross Belford was born in Illinois, later moving with his parents and several siblings to Kaufman Co., Texas. Here, in 1883, he married Martha "Mattie" Lay.

Their eldest son, James, was born in Texas. Daughter Ora and son Roy were born in Missouri. 1893 Newton brought his family to the Tulsa area. His wife Martha died in 1894.

Newton married Lelah Rouk on 21 Mar 1897 in Muskogee County, Indian Territory (Oklahoma). They had one son, Hugh.
