Elmira Belford was born in Illinois, most likely in Fulton Co. She was ninth-born of the twelve known children. She lived with her family in Bernadotte Twp., Fulton Co., and then in Eldorado Twp., McDonough Co., until her family relocated to Kaufman Co., Texas, in the early 1870's. Here John S. Belford, her father, and two of his sons-in-law purchased land, and made their family's homes.
Elmira's father died in 1875 and mother in 1876. She married Hugh Lee Belford on September 26, 1878, in Kaufman Co., Texas.
Here they began to raise a family, two children born in Kaufman Co., Texas; two children born in Fulton Co., Illinois; two children born in Gibson Co., Tennessee. The family was raised in the Presbyterian denomination.
They lived at Raymond, Kandiyohi Co., Minnesota, from late 1900 to abt. 1909, when they returned to live in Gibson Co., Tennessee.
Hugh preceded her in death (1925) and she appears to have done some traveling after that time. She traveled to be with her daughter Adah in North Dakota in 1925, where she lived for a period of time. She visited with her son Leroy in Aitkin for a few months in the late 1920's. Her daughters Ethel and Adah were married and living in the area of Milan, Tennessee, and she eventually made her home with them. She passed away on February 2, 1930, complications of lobar pneumonia, according to death records.
