The son of Lewis Berkeley and Frances Callender Noland Berkeley. He lived at Evergreen with his family and inherited it upon his fathers death. Edmund attended William and Mary, then married Mary Lawson Williams. They raised thirteen children at Evergreen. Before the Civil War, he was Captain of the Virginia Militia. The Evergreen Guards became Company C of the 8th Regiment of Virginia Volunteer Infantry. The Eighth fought in all the major battles in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. They sustained severe losses at Gettysburg, where Colonel Berkeley was wounded. After the war he returned to farming and took a great interest in the promotion of peace. In 1911, fifty years to the date of the First Battle of Manassas, he delivered an opening poem at the Manassas National Jubilee.
