John Henry Newby was one of the pioneer ranchers of West Texas. He took part in many Indian fights during the frontier days and was one of the large ranch owners of this part of Texas.

John Henry William Newby enlisted on 15 April 1861 in Montague County, Texas as a private in Company K, 1st Cavalry Regiment as a Confederate soldier.
